Today is the day to try to accept an award on behalf of somebody else.
Last night I went to a taping of the NPR show Wait Wait--Don't Tell Me!, which was very entertaining. Most entertaining though was observing some of the hardcore NPR fans. I throw NPR a few bucks a few times a year because they ask me to, and I like to listen to it, but, you know, I'm not going to leave them millions of dollars upon my death. Those are going to the maintenance and well-being of my 40 cats.
Last night there was a kid there, probably about 13 years old, who excitedly asked the checker-inners, "Now it's really going to be Peter Sagal and Carl Kassel there tonight? Not Cory Flintoff or anybody else like that?" He was practically jumping up and down with excitement. He also had long hair and was wearing a bright orange hat and matching t-shirt, so he was pretty noticeable. Once the players hit the stage, though, it was madness. Underpants were tossed on the stage. I think Tom Bodett once said casually that he was a fan of M&Ms, and people threw handfuls of the candies at the stage for the duration of the taping. Speaking of which we had to keep stopping because people kept screaming "I love you, Peter!!" which obviously messes up audio quality. Then everyone stormed the stage and despite the best efforts of the police barracading the front of the room, the crowd broke through, many people were trampled and eventually the theater was set on fire and burned down. Too bad.
