Today is the day to write your thank you notes.

I'm taking today to plug a thing of mine that's going on next week. So, running this site can be a pain in the butt sometimes. Sometimes, what you see on the screen can be half-assed. However, the rest of the time, it's been a lot of fun. It's helped my writing. It's let me meet a lot of cool people. And it's gotten me some cool opportunities.

So, if you or anybody you know is interested in slogging through the tough times of blogging in hopes of the payoffs, then check out the class I'm teaching next week for mediabistro here in Chicago called "breaking into blogging". I will share what I know and probably some things that I don't know. Everybody who signs up gets a free pair of sunglasses just like the ones I am wearing in my bio photo*.

*This is not true.

If you're too lazy to click on the link, here's the description of the class and my bio below:

"Blogger" isn't just a synonym for "nerd" anymore. The proprietors of high-profile blogs are now getting book deals, job offers, even photo spreads in Vanity Fair and New York magazine. Is blogging the future of writing? Yes! Or no? For every good blog, there are thousands that probably don't need to exist. Which kind will yours be?

This seminar is for writers (or aspiring writers) curious about whether they should create a blog, how to make their blog worth reading, blogging etiquette, and utilizing their blog to enhance their writing career.

In this seminar, you will learn about:

  • How to come up with blog material
  • What writing works best for your blog vs. freelancing/short stories
  • Building an audience and promoting your blog
  • Not letting your blog run your life
  • Using your blog to brand yourself and your writing
  • The community of blogging: links, comments and real life

Note: This seminar is more about content and promotion than technical aspects. It will not focus on designing your blog from scratch or the details of RSS and XML.
