Today is the day to learn about the tuba.

When was the last time you took a Polaroid photo, drew with crayons or tp'd someone's house? My other parent takes charge of my website and reminisces and you should do the same, so drop me an email with your story.

Thanks, Dear Mrs. Zulkey.com!

Dear Mrs. Zulkey.com:

I was raised to write thank you notes since before I was even literate (it's still questionable whether I am.) However, my thank you notes have always seem stilted and insincere. What is your advice on how to pen a good note of thanks?

Dearest Polite Person:

You certainly were raised well! No matter what some people might think, the thank you note is never unfashionable. No matter what you think of the gift in question, or whether you had a good time, or whether you enjoyed the dinner, that the person to whom you're writing went out of her way to do something nice for you. With that in mind your note should express enthusiasm and appreciation for the kindness and generosity that went into her efforts.

The best thank you notes certainly mention the relationship to the recipient. For instance, "You were such good friends of my parents,"or "I remember when I was a little girl and you came over," or "I remember when you were at our house, etc." And, of course, follow this up with something like "To remember us at this particular special moment in our lives is such a treat..."

You can follow it up with "We will treasure your gift (mention it by name) every time we use it, as a reminder of that relationship..." "It may not be often, but it will be on special occasions..."

Oh, and the thank you note should be hand-written, not emailed, and not left on the answering machine.

Dear Mrs. Zulkey.com is my mom and she can also advise you on folding fitted sheets, trapping raccoons and Russian history. Drop her a question!
